To support the alternative protein sector on a global scale, we need a strong international regulatory framework. In an effort to support this movement, GFI applied for and has just been granted official observer status with the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a commission A joint FAO-WHO organization dedicated to developing global standards for food safety and trade for consumers, producers, processors, and regulatory agencies. Observer status allows GFI to participate in the development of standards for the protein sector and attend meetings of individual Codex committees relevant to our work.
Alternative protein is expanding, but challenges remain
The alternative protein sector has expanded rapidly over the past five years. As the supply of plant-based products increases, with the challenge of providing a sensory experience similar to that of their animal-based counterparts, consumers are increasingly accepting them. This industry is expected to continue growing, attracting more players to the sector, investing in existing products, and creating new ones.
However, these advances are not without challenges. Current regulations on alternative proteins lag behind the current state of the industry and the pace of its development. Because it's a relatively new segment, discussions on standardizing best practices and technical recommendations for consistent regulation are still in their infancy.
To advance the alternative protein industry, we need a global regulatory framework.
A strong regulatory framework is crucial for the advancement of the alternative protein sector, as it employs specific technologies to create and produce its food products. Supporting the growth of this sector can have direct and positive impacts on global problems related to human health, environmental degradation, and global poverty. In a world hit by a pandemic, these issues have become even more urgent. And alternative protein consumption is at an all-time high.
A robust set of codes and regulations will enable the industry to meet this growing demand by providing safe and nutritious food. With standards that can be applied from farm to fork, the alternative protein industry can assure retailers, importers, and consumers that their food is safe to eat.
We are collaborating with Codex to support the future of food.
Understanding comprehensive regulations can only be built through diverse collaboration and sound scientific knowledge. Codex welcomes listeners to contribute their industry expertise to the international standard-setting process. As an observer, GFI is now one of the organizations able to weigh in on these critical discussions. Through this opportunity, our committed teams of scientists, business leaders, and policy experts are ready to work with the commission to build a regulatory framework for international food safety standards that supports a more sustainable, healthy, and fair global food system.
